Pink climbing roses along a weathered wooden fence

Roses, paperwork, and a good laugh

Thu, Oct 8 · In person

Marjorie was waiting on the porch when I pulled up, cardigan on and garden gloves already in her lap. We spent the first half hour deadheading the climbing roses along the fence. She directed, I clipped, and she corrected my technique twice. She was right both times.

Inside, we sorted the week's mail together. There was a renewal notice from her Medicare supplement plan, which I've taken to review, and a birthday card from her granddaughter that made her very happy. She read it to me twice.

She mentioned her right knee felt stiff on the back steps. She wasn't in pain, but she's holding the rail more. I've added it to my list to raise at her November checkup.

Where things stand: In good spirits and eating well. Supplement renewal is with me. Knee stiffness is noted for Dr. Moreno on Nov 3.

Quick check-in call

Mon, Oct 5 · Phone

Marjorie called to tell me the new hearing aid batteries are working and she can hear the birds again. We confirmed Thursday's visit and she asked me to bring a library copy of the new mystery from her book club list.

Where things stand: Hearing aids working. Book is on hold at the library for Thursday.

Eye appointment, and lunch after

Thu, Oct 1 · Appointment

I drove Marjorie to her annual eye exam. Her prescription is unchanged, and the doctor was pleased. Afterward we had soup at the café she likes, and she told me about the summer she drove across the country with her sister in 1961. When I dropped her home, she pulled out the old road atlas to show me their route, still traced in pencil.

She asked whether she still needs to stop driving at night. The doctor said yes, and Marjorie took it in stride. I've noted that evening outings should be planned with a ride.

Where things stand: Eyes stable. No night driving. Next exam in one year.

Setting up the pill organizer

Thu, Sep 24 · In person

We set up a new weekly pill organizer with large print labels, and Marjorie filled the first week herself while I watched. She said it was easier than the old one. We also wrote out a grocery list and planned Sunday's dinner with Michael. Then she made us a pot of tea and finished the crossword, in pen, while I labeled the organizer.

Where things stand: New organizer in use. I'll check it at each visit for the next month.
